FACEBOOK FINALLY ACTIVATES 'SAFETY CHECK' IN NIGERIA FOLLOWING YOLA ATTACK

Following the terrorist attacks on Tuesday
evening in the northeastern city of Yola, in which 32 people were killed and dozens wounded, Facebook finally activated its 'Safety Check'  feature in Nigeria.

Facebook Safety Check is a feature managed by Facebook and activated during natural or man-made disasters to quickly determine whether people in the affected geographical area are safe.  This feature allows people to 'check-in'  and let family and friends know they are safe.

Mark Zuckerberg,  founder of Facebook, made the announcement in a post on his account earlier this morning, following the Tuesday attack in Yola.

He said, “ We've activated safety check again after the bombing in Nigeria this evening(Tuesday evening)”.

Facebook's decision to implement this feature came after a heavy backlash on the social network for activating it for the attacks in Paris on Friday, but not after bomb blast hit the Lebanese capital,  Beirut, a day earlier.

The network was accused of valuing the lives of Western victims more than those of other regions, but Facebook has come out to deny this charge.

Zuckerberg further said, “ After the Paris attack last week, we made the decision to use Safety Check for more tragic events like this going forward. We're now working quickly to develop criteria for the new policy and determine when and how this service can be most useful.”
